HONG KONG —Veteran Hong Kong international Danny Ho moved a step closer to end his four years trophy drought after edging through the semi-final of the National Triples last Sunday, Oct 12.

Ho, who is now a coach assistant with the Hong Kong team, last won a major trophy in 2010 when he lifted the National Indoor Singles title. He won the competition three times before, in 1992, 1995 and 1996 respectively. His latest achievement is as a defeated finalist in 2009.

This year he represented Kowloon Cricket Club at the National Triples, partnering with Bernard Leung and Timmy Kwong. The same combination, plus ex-Hong Kong international Jimmy Chiu, was defeated in the quarter-finals at the National Fours earlier this year.

Ho met a strong team from Craigengower Cricket Club at the semi-final, combining the experience of veteran Hong Kong international David Tso and two young but talented bowlers Kevin Fung and Lee Ka Ho.

On paper it should be a tight game, but this was not reflected on the actual score. The CCC team started the game with a two shots win in the first end. But after just six ends they were struggling and were down by 3:10. They fought back fiercely and the score line of 10:13 on the 11th end did give them a glimpse of hope.

However, Ho and his team performed at a high level of concentration and took seven shots from the following four ends and killed any hope of their opponents. The game finished 12:21.

Ho will play KC Ching, Li Ming Sum and Roger Tse from Island Lawn Bowls Club in the final.

Women
In the women competition, the final of the National Triples will become an internal affair of Hong Kong Football Club. Emmie Wong will lead her partners Wong Yee Ming and Connie Chung to play against the trio of Phyllis Wong, Shirley Ma and Camilla Leung.

The two finals of the National Triples plus a number of finals for other competitions will be played at the second Finals Day of the year on Jan 25, 2015, but the venue is not yet confirmed.

Claudius Lam is an Officer with the Hong Kong Lawn Bowls Association.
