A car crash in Dana Point in Orange County, California on Sunday left two dead and three others seriously injured, with one official saying on Monday that alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the crash.

The Pacific Coast Highway at Beach Road was the location of the accident. The highway was closed in both directions between Camino Capistrano and Palisades Road, but re-opened around 9:20 p.m. PDT, reported KABC.

The three injured people were transported to Mission Regional Trauma Center.

The Orange County Major Accident Reconstruction Team is investigating what happened.

Four cars were involved.

“It appears initially that the Volkswagen [Jetta] attempted some type of passing movement, and then shortly after that the collision occurred,” said Orange County Sheriff’s Lt. Jeff Hallock.

The Jetta split in half, killing a 43-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman.

A minivan flipped on its side, leaving a man and a woman injured.

One woman in the Honda Civic involved was also hurt.

The fourth car involved, a Mini Cooper, was being driven by a 15-year-old student driver, who was with an instructor.

Hallock told Fox on Monday that it is believed that alcohol played a role in the crash.

Investigators are waiting for the results of toxicology tests to confirm their suspicions.
