Pondicherry, India, after Cyclone Thane passed through

PUDUCHERRY, India—Cyclone Thane pounded the southern coast of India Friday morning killing at least 35 people and leaving a trail of heavy damage on the Tamil Nadu coast and the Union territory of Puducherry (also known as Pondicherry).

The powerful 140 kmph (87 mph) winds and torrential rains battered fisheries along the coast in a frightening reminder of the 2004 tsunami that devastated the same area.

Rescue crews are working to remove uprooted trees and electrical poles blocking roads, restore power, and bring drinking water to the affected communities.

It will take some time to recover, say locals, faced with collapsed homes and destroyed fishing boats.
