Singer Chris Brown said on Monday that he lost “everything” after he hit former girlfriend, pop singer Rihanna.

Speaking on the “Today” show, Brown said that after the 2009 incident, he has been “humbled by the experience.”

“From me losing everything, you know, to me having to regain public opinion or whatever it is,” he said.

Brown added that the knowledge “that what I did was totally wrong and having to kind of deal with myself and kind of forgive myself in the same breath and being able to apologize to, you know, Rihanna and be that man that can be who is a man, you know?”

Just a night before the 2009 Grammy Awards, Brown was involved in a domestic dispute with Rihanna, leaving her in the hospital. He was charged with battery.

Lauer made reference to Brown’s behavior since then, saying that he has displayed an argumentative streak, including an alleged altercation with singer Frank Ocean and calling out followers on Twitter. “I think everybody is entitled to their opinion. For me, it’s just a learning process. You know, I have to just take it one day at a time,” Brown replied.

Brown was on the show to promote his latest single, “Fine China” from his forthcoming album “X.”

Speaking about the album, he said, “My music is maturing so I have a lot more to talk about, whether it be personal relationships, trials and tribulations, just me as a young 23-year-old man.”
