VANCOUVER, Canada—On day six of the Winter Games, the ladies took to the ice for the ladies’ 500 m short track speed skating.
For both final groups A and B, there was restart after restart, because of a string of false starts and crashes.
When the four skaters of group B at last sprinted onto the open ice, Canadian skater Kalyna Roberge had a clear lead. Yet it was not her night. China’s Zhou Yang caught up to her at the last turn before the finish line, finishing with a time of 44.725 seconds.
In the finals for group A, with all Canadians turning their eyes to 21-year-old Jessica Greigg to win gold, she came in last. Apart from winning the gold medal with 43.048 seconds, China’s Wang Meng broke the Olympic record during her semi final with 42.985 seconds. She also won the gold medal in Torino 2006 in the same race.
Canada’s other skater, Marianne St-Gelais, whose birthday is today, had another thing to celebrate—she took silver, her first Olympic medal, with the time of 43.707 seconds. Italy’s Arianna Fontana won the bronze at 43.804 seconds.
