A chimpanzee escaped from her backyard cage in Las Vegas Saturday for the second time in less than a month.
The chimp, called CJ, broke out of her cage, and neighbors alerted police soon after, the Las Vegas Sun reported.
Police created a confinement area and then went after the chimp with tranquilizer darts before capturing her not far from her home, officials told the newspaper.
One month ago, CJ and her mate, Buddy, escaped and ran around banging on car roofs. Buddy was killed by police after he got too close to people who were standing outside watching.
CJ’s handler, Miguel Gutierrez, told KTNV television that “even from a weaker cage, I would never expect her to get out” a second time.
The primate’s owner, Timmi DeRosa, said that she received phone calls asking for the chimp’s release.
“We have gotten calls that people want to let CJ out so they can pass this law in Las Vegas,” she said, saying that she was fearful that someone may have “tampered with the cage.”
