In communist societies, obtaining basic necessities—like food—is a real issue. Famines, food shortages, poor central planning policies, and even man-made forced famines, used to commit mass murder of a populace, are commonplace in communist systems.

As a result, there have been multiple outbreaks of cannibalism in the communist Soviet Union, China, Cambodia, Ethiopia, and North Korea.
