NEW YORK—The city’s popular Made in New York brand is expanding from film to include the city’s booming tech industry, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced on Tuesday.

It will making finding a job in the fast-growing tech industry even easier—something the mayor says he may tap into when his third and final term is up.

“Since I am going to be unemployed in 315 days I am starting to pay a little more attention to these sorts of things. You never know,” Bloomberg said with a smile.

The mayor uses a new iPad mini, but that may not be enough to compete with the thousands of young tech-savvy job seekers flooding the market in New York. With roughly 3,000 positions to fill in over 900 startups, the city is hoping the new “We Are Made in NY“ job map, specifically for the tech industry, will make it easier for high tech job seekers to call New York City their home.

Visitors to the site can also find links to free wi-fi access, places to take coding classes, and summer internship opportunities. 

“New York is the center of a new generation of makers and builders who are writing our future using code,” said Jessica Lawrence, managing director of New York Tech Meetup. “We are proud to continue to work with the city and the Made in New York program to showcase all of those makers and builders.” 

The Made in New York logo, launched exclusively for the television and film industry 10 years ago, will be used to promote the newly expanded program.

New Yorkers will begin to see ads promoting the campaign on subways, buses, and of course, the Internet. Companies not currently on the map, but are hiring can add their company.

New York City’s tech industry has seen significant growth, with the number of employees growing by 80 percent between 2007 and 2011. BuzzFeed, the popular online social news organization headquartered in New York City, has grown from 15 to 215 employees in the past three years.

“The growth and success of our company happened in and is because of New York. New York is the center of the media world,” said Jon Steinberg, president and COO of Buzzfeed. “Only in New York can you do five meetings in a day, put in a full day of work at your desk and have an unlimited choice of industry events and other cultural happenings into the evening.”
