HONG KONG—The Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, Marriott Rewards Round the Island Race took place last Sunday Nov 15, with 232 boats taking part in a full navigation of Hong Kong Island—a total of 26 nautical miles.
The overall winner was defending champion, Calum Gregor helming 29er Wayne, Hobie 16 helmed by Karl Chan came 2nd and Siu Ka Chun came 3rd helming the 420 of Sea School 1. Last year Gregor won in a 420 with Hugo Christensson. This year his partner was Russell Aylsworth.
Early Start
Boats started gathering early in the morning with the first wave of boats setting off at 8:30am with starts continuing from two start lines through to the faster racers, Hobie 16’s and F18’s leaving at 9:50am.
The fastest boat of the day starting at 8:50am was RHKYC Coach Rob Partridge on a single handed International Moth which took 2hr 47min for the 26nm race. Partridge took line honours by a long way but on corrected time he finished in 40th place. It was a fast run in brisk, but not the highest wind conditions, so he was still over 30min outside the record held by N Maloney skippering an Aberdeen Extreme 40 multihull in 2013.
