The Big East Conference has named Mike Aresco, executive vice president, Programming of CBS Sports, as its new commissioner, according to a release on the conference’s website.

Aresco, whose hiring was approved unanimously by the league’s presidents, will officially assume commissioner duties in September.

“The presidents have acted very responsibly,” said Interim Commissioner Joe Bailey. “They have appointed a leader with integrity, intelligence, and energy. Bravo!”

Aresco’s experience in negotiating television contracts was surely a major plus for once-powerful conference that’s been losing universities to conferences with better TV deals.

At CBS, Aresco was responsible for the division’s college sports properties, including contract negotiations and acquisitions for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship, regular-season college basketball and football bowl games.

Before CBS, Aresco worked at ESPN where he oversaw the long-term strategies for all of ESPN and ESPN2’s college sports properties.
