A BBC photographer, Brock Elbank, is on a mission to photograph as many freckled people as possible.

In his words, Elbank wants to celebrate the beauty of freckled faces in “all their glory.”

He photographed more than 90 people from around the world to complete the project.

Freckles are clusters of concentrated melaninized cells that are usually most visible on people who have a fair complexion.

The formation of freckles is caused after one is exposed to sunlight. After one is exposed to UV-B radiation, melanocytes are activated to increase melanin production, which may cause freckles to become visible.

While they’re rare on infants, they are commonly found on children before puberty. They will reappear if they’ve been altered with lasers or creams.
