TAOYUAN, Taiwan—Band chief Xu Haoxiang attended Shen Yun’s fourth performance in Taoyuan City, Taiwan, with four other members of his band on March 29.

“It was amazing!“ he said. ”They can put together so many different ethnic dances in China in such a short time. They looked like the same dancers, but when they present the dances of different races, you can even see a lot of subtle differences in the dances.”

“I was really surprised by it all,” he added.

Mr. Xu is very enthusiastic about music, so he was especially interested in the Shen Yun Orchestra. “It is very interesting that they can present the Oriental music with so many western musical instruments without making it sound awkward,” he said.

“The Shen Yun Orchestra masterfully blends two of the world’s greatest classical music traditions,” read Shen Yun’s website. “The Western orchestra with its energy and grandeur, and the Chinese instruments with their distinct tones and styles, create a dramatic new sound.”

Mr. Xu said that the performance was very inspirational for his own works. “I feel very happy to know that the nutrition of the land of ancient China is so rich! I can see how it’s grown such a beautiful flower today.”

After seeing Shen Yun, he said that he wants to know more about China’s many different races and cultures. “Then, I can absorb more nutrients from them, and let more people hear the sounds from the Chinese people.”

The performances of the male dancers in Shen Yun reveal masculinity, strength, and beauty. Mr. Xu was most impressed by one dance in particular. “I was so shocked by the Tibetan dance,“ he said. ”I could completely feel the vitality of the Tibetan youth and the body movements on the plateau in the steps of the male performers.”

“It was really astounding,” he added.

Mr. Xu said that he was also quite amazed by the high-tech dynamic backdrop. “I think the backdrop was marvelous. Wow! How can they blend modern technology with traditional dance so cleverly?”

Shen Yun’s state-of-the-art graphics create “vividly animated settings, extending the stage and transporting the audience to a world where heaven and earth are one,” states the website.

Mr. Xu compared the screen-audience immersion to “viewing the whole world from the land of our own culture.”

“I was greatly moved,” he concluded. “I can’t describe the astonishment of feelings with words because it’s too great a shock from so deep within my heart!”
