Noted Italian automobile designer Sergio Scaglietti, who penned many of the most famous classic racing Ferraris, died Sunday at the age of 91.

Scaglietti started Carrozzeria Scaglietti in 1951. His designs soon caught the eye of Enzo Ferrari, and within a few years was Ferrari’s favorite designer, particularly for racing cars. The Scaglietti coachworks also built Ferraris with bodies designed by other design houses, including the 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO.

Ferrari bought up Carrozzeria Scaglietti and now uses the factory to make bodies for certain Ferrari models, including the 612 Scaglietti, named in honor of the automobile artist.

Ferrari Chairman Luca di Montezemolo issued the following statement after the designer’s death: “Today is a sad day for Ferrari. We lost a friend, a travel companion, a man who had his name forever connected to the Prancing Horse.

“Sergio Scaglietti leaves behind the legacy of an artist who with his talent created some of the most beautiful cars of our history. Who had the luck to know him like I did will also remember him as a straightforward and honest man, completely dedicated to his work. We will miss him.”
