The ASUU strike 2013 continues, and the latest update is that the union hasn’t discussed what happened in the “secret meeting” that went from Friday into Saturday.
There were indications on Friday night that the union was going to call off the strike on Saturday.
But no union members have publicly acknowledged the meeting, and none have disclosed what took place in the meeting.
The Punch set about trying to get a comment from multiple union members, as well as union president Nasir Fasse. But no one answered their phones or responded to text messages.
The meeting is being called the “secret meeting“ because there was no official announcement from the ASUU that the meeting was happening, and the only sign the meeting was taking place came from insider information divulged through anonymous sources.
Representatives from over 50 universities were at the meeting, reported the Vanguard, citing anonymous sources.
Sources said the reason the union isn’t announcing anything publicly is because union leadership promised President Goodluck Jonathan that they would inform him of whatever decision was reached before going public.
The universities of the north favored calling off the strike, a source said, while universities from the south supported continuing the strike.
“However , we were able to take a middle course that would be pleasant to Nigerians,” the source said, “but that will not be discussed now at the public domain until we meet Mr. President in line with our last discussion.”
