Apple Lion, the Cupertino, Calif.-based tech company’s newest operating system, and a new MacBook Air were among the products announced by Apple on Wednesday in official statements.

Apple said Mac OS X Lion will include an app store for Macs and a new feature called Mission Control that combines Exposé, Dashboard, Space, and full screen apps.

“Lion brings many of the best ideas from iPad back to the Mac, plus some fresh new ones like Mission Control that Mac users will really like,” said Apple CEO Steve Jobs in a statement. “Lion has a ton of new features, and we hope the few we had time to preview today will give users a good idea of where we are headed.”

The Mac App Store will operate through iTunes, making the buying and downloading of apps a familiar act for MacHeads. OS X Lion will also be able to support full-screen apps like an iPad.

Apply hailed the new MacBook Air as “faster … more reliable … light and smaller” than before, saying that the notebook’s solid state drives should make life a lot easier on users. Apple will sell its new MacBook Air in 11-inch and 13-inch models that weigh 2.3 pounds or more.

Mac OS X Lion will ship next summer, while the new MacBook Air is available now through the online Apple Store, with prices starting at $999.
