Apple announced that the new software stack and operating system upgrade for the iPhone, called iOS4, will released days before the market debut of the iPhone 4G. The new technology can be used on with the iPhone 3GS, iPhone G, and the new iPhone 4.

Apple first unveiled the specs of the new iPhone 4 at the WWDC conference in May this year, but hype about the product had already hit the mainstream well before then.

Apple has listed the iOS4 technology as “coming soon” on their official website, without listing a specific release date. The update has more than 100 new features that will enhance current and upcoming iPhone models.

One of the most anticipated features in the new iOS4 is the multitasking feature. Apple has also advertised the iPhone 3GS as being multitasking-capable with the new iOS4 update, which means that users will be able to work on multiple applications at the same time.

iOS4 will also feature updated versions of existing Apple applications in addition to brand new features. The Folders feature will be able to file 2,160 different iPhone applications. The new update will feature a new e-mail set up. The iPhone’s photo software will allow for up to 5x digital zoom. There is also a Tap-to-Focus Video function that will work well with the video editing applications for the camera on the new iPhone.

The official release of the iOS4 update is expected to come this week but Apple is leaving consumers in the dark to add to the suspense behind the release of the update. Apple has a history of doing this: the buzz behind the launch of the iPad helped it sell over 1 million units in the beginning of May and with the ongoing hype around the iPhone 4, the results could turn out to be the same.

In contrast to its name though, the iPhone 4 will not support 4G cellular technology. Sprint is currently offering an EVO smartphone by HTC that has 4G technology. Sprint has a 4G network that has advertised speeds of up to ten times that of current 3G networks.

The iPhone 4 will be carried primarily by AT&T which at this time does not have a 4G network. It is rumored that the iPhone will soon be available on Verizon, but Verizon does not currently have a 4G network either.

The Sprint EVO by HTC is already available for purchase and it broke sales records for Sprint who ran out of stock on the first day of the phone’s sale. Sprint is following up on the success of the HTC EVO by doing massive advertising for the phone and its network.

The iPhone 4 will be available for purchase on the 24th of June while pre-orders can be made on Apple’s company website, as well as at Best Buy and Best Buy Mobile stores.
