Angry Birds, the highly popular game on mobiles and portable devices, is now on Android phones for free as of Friday.
Rovio Mobile is offering the game via the download site GetJar.com, which is an independent app store.
“Selecting GetJar as the place to launch our first-ever full Android version of Angry Birds was an obvious choice,” Peter Vesterbacka, the Rovio Mobile head, said in a press release, according to PC World.
“GetJar’s global reach and popularity as well as their unique App It! Download service ensures that we reach a massive audience of fanatically loyal Angry Birds addicts. The unique App It! Link means we can also cross-promote our Symbian and Android versions without the need to send folks to multiple places to get their favorite game.”
At around 10 a.m. Friday, the app store was flooded with downloads and the site crashed temporarily.
“Despite crashes, 95,000+ copies of Angry Birds downloaded from GetJar in 3 hours,” a Twitter post by GetJar read. In case of future problems, the company recommends going to m.getjar.com.
Angry Birds allows users to take control of a flock of birds who are trying to grab eggs from a band of evil pigs. The objective is to take out all pigs on each of the 195 levels.
Since its release for Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch, the game has sold more than 6.5 million copies.
