Rahul Gandhi retained his Amethi seat by defeating BJP’s Smriti Irani.
Gandhi won the seat by a margin of 1.07 lakh votes, reported the Economic Times. Gandhi got about 406,000 votes while Irani got about 330,000.
He had won by a margin of 3.70 votes in 2009.
The Times of India noted that the 2014 margin may be cause for worry for congress.
The Associated Press labeled its images of Gandhi “India Waning Dynasty,” and said that the campaign led by Rahul Gandhi, the son, grandson, and great-grandson of Indian prime ministers turned out badly.
“The Indian National Congress party suffered the most crushing defeat in its 128-year history Friday as the results of India’s general election were released,” it said. “The next prime minister will be Narendra Modi, who led the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party to a solid victory, in part by seizing on the perception that Rahul Gandhi was little more than a crown prince awaiting his prize.”
Gandhi is the vice president of the congress.
