Hollywood’s second biggest awards night of the year was held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif., on Sunday, Jan. 16.
The Golden Globe Awards show, which is hosted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and aired on NBC, is noted for being less formal than the Academy Awards. As opposed to a theater setting, the room is arranged with dinner tables, and viewers can observe the stars socializing as the broadcast cuts for commercial breaks.
The presentation also honors movies with a separate category for comedy and musicals, and has an entire series of awards dedicated to television, both of which are excluded in the Academy Awards format.
British producer and comedian Ricky Gervais hosted the proceedings for a third straight year. Though he had several off-color jokes, his delivery was noticeably tamer than the previous year when many of his jokes were viewed as mean-spirited.
One particular highlight of the show was the presentation of the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award to Morgan Freeman. Co-presenters and veteran actors Sidney Poitier and Dame Helen Mirren introduced the award.
Poitier, the first black to win an Oscar, gave a solemn and dignified tribute to Freeman on the eve of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, calling him a “prince in his profession.” Mirren’s introduction was light and playful. A video highlighting Freeman’s work was shown and then he gave a brief yet heartfelt speech.
