The University of Washington defeated Washington State University 35-28 in the Apple Cup on Saturday, according to the Seattle Times. The rival football game is a yearly tradition between the Huskies and the Cougars and has generated more excitement than usual this year.

It was the first time since 2002 that both teams had won the game preceding the Apple Cup. This victory for Washington will place the team in either the upcoming Alamo or Holiday Bowl.

The annual Huskies vs. Cougars series began in 1900, according to The University of Washington official athletic website, with a game ending in a 5-5 tie. It was dubbed the “Apple Cup” in 1962 after the region’s abundant apple crop.

Washington is the current leader in total wins, while Washington State won four out of the last six games including a win in 2008 that went into double overtime.

The winner of Saturday’s game was predicted to be the Huskies by an elephant at the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle on Thursday, according to the Tri-City Herald. The elephant picked from two baskets of apples, one wrapped in the Huskies’s purple and gold colors and the other in the Cougars’s crimson and gray.
