Arm Lift Surgery Got Popular Fast (+Photo)
Arm Lift Surgery: A plastic surgery procedure that eliminates extra flab from the underside of arms skyrocketed in popularity, from 300 in 2000 to more than 15,000 in 2012, according to a report from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
Dr. David Reath, a plastic surgeon in Knoxville, Tenn, told Discovery news that the surgery is the second most popular in his experience, right after the tummy tuck.
“When people are successful with weight loss, either through surgery or with diet and exercise, they can end up with excess skin on their arms,” Reath said.
“In many people there is excess skin and fat,” said Dr. Al Aly, of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, told WCCO-TV. “Basically, an upper arm lift is done to eliminate the excess and return the arm to that normal contour.”
The society polled 1,219 women in March and April, and found women are paying more attention to their arms, admiring the arms of Michelle Obama and actresses Jennifer Aniston, Jessica Biel, and Demi Moore.
“Women are paying more attention to their arms in general and are becoming more aware of options to treat this area,” ASPS President Gregory Evans said in a statement.
He said 98 percent of 15,000 arm lift patients in the United States last year were women and more than 75 percent of these were aged over 40.
Nancy Ahearn, cited by WCCO, lost 30 pounds through diet and exercise, and decided to get the surgery done after finding out that her arms wouldn’t tone up.
