Hot on the heels of Apple releasing the sixth beta of OS X El Capitan, developers have stumbled across strings of code that provide even more proof that the next-gen 21.5 inch iMac will come with a dazzling 4K Retina display. Thankfully, the wonders of a 4K computing experience are about to get much more affordable.

Originally discovered by Consomac, the code in question, new to the most recent beta, makes reference to a display with a 4096×2304 resolution, a possible reference to a 4K iMac.

Given that Apple’s venerable 21.5-inch iMac hasn’t seen a substantive update since September 2013, it stands to reason that when Apple does finally introduce a new model it will come with some compelling new features; and clearly, a 4K display coupled with Intel’s new Skylake chipset certainly meets that standard.

Now because Apple traditionally doesn’t tinker with pricing on its more established products, it’s a good bet that you might soon be able to pick up a 21.5-inch iMac with a 4K display for somewhere in the $1299 range.

As for a release date, Apple would ideally like to get these new iMacs into the hands of consumers before the busy back-to-school shopping season. That possibility, however, likely hinges on how quickly the company can gain access to Intel’s Skylake processors. At the very least, one would expect Apple to release new iMac models before the always-lucrative holiday shopping season.
