Anthony Mundine will go vs Carson Jones later this month, after beating former hall of famer Shane Mosley, who has since retired.

The fight will be on January 29 at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

In his last fight, Jones was stopped in eight rounds by welterweight Kell Brook.

At least one analyst is confused at the match-up.

Nick Walshaw of the Daily Telegraph wrote that if Mundine is really planning to challenge Floyd Mayweather Jr. by the end of the year, he should have picked a stronger opponent for this fight.

“Unranked by the four major divisions - which, even with our Maths in Society background, would seem to be outside the best 15 on the planet - Jones is the American boxer handpicked by Team Mundine to fight in Brisbane on a date later this month we refuse to mention here,” Walshaw wrote.

“And it’s because, put bluntly, this fight is less appealing than Aussie Joe Bugner in bike pants.”

Boxing fans agreed, with one commenting on a Fight News article:

“You can’t tell the world you’re seriously chasing Pac or Floyd then make an announcement that you are fighting someone who isn’t rated - coming of a KO loss and only won one fight in his last 4 outings - lost 10 times already - KO'd 3 times and competes as a welterweight.”

Team Mundine, for its part, said in a statement: ““Whilst other options within the top ten had significantly out-priced themselves, Carson Jones offers the best possible opportunity within a tight timeframe to prepare for the January 29th show.”
