The patient, who was not named, died shortly after the beating at a medical center in Perm, located in the Ural mountains, reported Sky News.

The broadcaster reported that the death was not related to the beating.

Votyakov was shown beating the patient about the head. The video was captured on Feb. 21, 2013.

He told the Moscow Times that the patient insulted him after reportedly working 36 hours straight.

“As soon as fellow medical personnel and I approached the patient, he began to insult me with some detestable words. That’s when I, so to say, went berserk. We had worked for a long time on this difficult patient … and no thanks whatsoever!” he said.

“And then the chronic tiredness added to it. I got carried away, and I punched him several times,” he added, according to The Metro.

Votyakov told Sky that he apologized to the patient’s parents, saying he was “very sorry.”

He was fired from his job after the video became public.

A Perm police spokesman told the Metro: “We saw the video which went on YouTube. We are investigating it and checking the details of what happened.”
