Andrew Koppel, son of ABC newscaster Ted Koppel, was found dead Tuesday in New York by local police. An investigation revolving around the cause of death is underway.
Andrew Koppel was found dead in his Manhattan apartment located in the Washington Heights Neighborhood at 1:30 a.m Monday. The coroner’s office in New York performed an autopsy and is waiting for toxicology reports. The cause of death may not be known for another four to six weeks, reported the Associated Press.
The New York Post reported that Andrew Koppel had been drinking at a mid-town Manhattan bar the day before his death. Russell Wimberly, a patron of the same bar, told the New York Post that he had been with Andrew Koppel before his death.
Wimberly said that the pair had met in a bar after noticing that they were wearing matching hats. After drinking for the majority of the evening, Wimberly took Koppel home, where he died later that night.
Belinda Caban, a friend of Wimberly’s was with the pair before Andrew Koppel’s death and commented on the issue.
“I didn’t understand anything [Koppel] said. We took him to the bedroom and laid him down to rest. His complexion wasn’t right. It was pale. I said to call the police. When the ambulance came, they said he was dead, said Caban to the New York Post.
Andrew Koppel had been working in New York as an attorney from 2001 to 2008. Koppel was a part of the civil litigation team for New York City’s Housing Authority.
Koppel had previous interaction with the police for belligerent behavior brought on after drinking. In 1993 he punched a secretarial worker from the US Senate and was put into an alcoholic treatment program.
TV Broadcaster and radio personality Ted Koppel has not made a statement to the press regarding the issue at this time. Ted Koppel is know for his long running position on ABC’s Nightline. He is now working for a British radio show.
