NEW YORK—State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo followed in his father’s footsteps on Tuesday by becoming New York’s 56th governor. Cuomo soundly defeated Republican contender Buffalo real estate developer Carl Paladino.

Cuomo has led in the polls throughout the race, going into Tuesday’s election with a 58 to 33 percent  lead in the polls statewide and a 78-15 percent in New York City. Paladino, a Tea Party Republican, often alienated voters with his straightforward, if clumsy and at times, aggressive speeches. He was quoted at his voting poll in Buffalo Tuesday morning, saying “I’m going to win this thing today.” Paladino also swore off all future elections, saying “No more elections. This is it.” According to BuffaloNews.com.

Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand both defeated their Republican challengers, Jay Townsend and Joe DioGuardi, respectively. Schumer won his third term in office and Gillibrand won her first election to the office, after Gov. David Paterson appointed her and after President Obama appointed Hilary Clinton secretary of state.

After a bitter race for the state attorney general office between Democrat Eric Schneiderman and Republican and Conservative Party nominee Dan Donovan, as of press time the race was tight with Schneiderman taking a narrow lead. Cuomo crossed the state with Schneiderman over the weekend in an end run strategy that may pay off for the first time state AG.

The Democratic sweep was largely confined to New York it seems, as of press time Republicans across the United States picked up 34 seats in Congress, but only 3 seats in the Senate, in a much anticipated rebuke of President Obama and a majority held in both houses by Democrats.
