America's Perfect Teen pageant crowned 16-year-old British high school student Anysha Panesar as the top teen, beating out 80 other contestants from around the US.

Panesar was on holiday with her family in Kissimmee, Florida where she was informed that she could enter the competition as an international contestant.

As the winner of the contest, Panesar is expected to receive $2,000 in cash and a list of other rewards.

Previous prize packages include a full scholarship, modeling opportunities, and lots of clothing.

Panesar, who attends an all-girls’ school in Wales, said her family was surprised that she won.

"My mum was sitting there crying her eyes out and my dad didn't know what to do with himself. My grandparents were on the phone – they were all so proud," said told the BBC.

The fact that she is British caused a bit of controversy among US contestants.

"Yes, her win caused a bit of a stir because she is, of course, British," said Michael Galanes, the founder of the pageant.

"But that is perfectly within the rules of the competition and those people are just naysayers."
