Amazon Workspaces, which “gives Enterprise IT the power to meet this challenge head-on,” was unveiled for a limited preview on Wednesday.

The company is offering the service but users have to sign up.

According to the company, “Amazon WorkSpaces provides ... a desktop computing experience in the cloud. It is easy to provision and maintain, and can be accessed from a wide variety of client devices.”

The program, which appears similar to VMWare or Virtual Box, allows a user to “install the client application on the device of their choice. After a quick download, they have access to a complete Windows 7 experience in the cloud, with persistent storage, bundled utilities and productivity applications, and access to files and other resources on the corporate intranet.”

In short, Amazon explains: “Amazon WorkSpaces offers you an easy way to provide a fully managed, cloud-based desktop experience to your end-users. You don’t have to worry about procuring or deploying hardware or installing complex software to deliver a desktop experience to your users. Amazon WorkSpaces takes care of all the heavy lifting of managing hardware and software, and tasks such as patching and maintenance, enabling you to deliver a high quality desktop experience to your users.”

Customers can sign up here.
