Alyssa Jo Lommel, a University of Minnesota student, could lose some of her limbs after being left on a porch for hours following a night of tequila shots.
Lommel spent a night on December 6 with friends playing games and drinking heavily.
They dropped her off at her house, but she was found on the porch of her neighbor’s home on Saturday morning. Her hands and feet were damaged from being outside in subzero temperatures.
Lommel’s parents, Jay and Teri, said in a statement that they’re asking for privacy at this time “so that we may focus on her healing,” reported the St. Cloud Times.
“We are hopeful that her body will heal itself,” Teri Lommel said. Losing one or more limbs is a possibility, and Alyssa will be in the hospital for quite some time.
The Duluth Police Department says it’s not clear how Lommel ended up on her neighbor’s porch.
Footprints in the snow show Lommel may have tried to enter a car in the backyard of her neighbor’s home. The residents of the home were out of town.
Lommel was wearing jeans, a sweatshirt, and no gloves when she was found. The temperature that night reached -17 degrees Fahrenheit.
Friends told police that Lommel was driving for six hours, and police found a tweet from Lommel that said: “Yum Yum 10th shot of tequila,” reported the Grand Forks Herald.
The driver of the car that dropped Lommel off told police that Lommel had “no more than usual.”
“Just like a normal party chick,” the driver said. “She wasn’t wasted. She could talk. And she wasn’t falling-down drunk.”
Lommel is a psychology and sociology major.
The University of Minnesota Duluth issued a statement from Lisa Ann Erwin and Mike Seymour saying that the university’s police department “urges caution in the extreme cold.”
“Travel in groups. Let people know where and when you will be traveling, and check in,” the statement read.
“Our hearts are with Alyssa and her family in these difficult times,” it added.
“Alyssa’s friends have been deeply affected by this tragedy, and we encourage students to reach out to UMD Health Services for counseling and support.”
