Photos currently being shared en masse on Facebook are likely of a newborn deer–not an “alien,” as many were claiming. Some people claimed the creature was a sign of extraterrestrial life after a “UFO sighting” over much of California during the weekend.

Here’s an example of the message that has been going around:

Seems this is going viral on Facebook. They are talking about a missle launch and consequent “lights” then stating they heard screaming and found this “alien” or animal:

In Southern California everybody noticed a bright weird light. The government tried to tell everybody it’s a testing of a missile launching. And now ppl in San Jose, CA are seeing dead aliens laying around and Facebook deleting it every time somebody mentions it.

However, the bright light that numerous people saw in Southern California over the weekend was confirmed to be the launch of a Trident missile at a U.S. Navy base. According to the San Diego Union Tribune, the “mystery light” over the ocean was a missile test.

Cmdr. Ryan Perry with the Navy’s Third Fleet issued a statement, which says: “Each test activity provides valuable information about our systems, thus contributing to assurance in our capabilities.”

After that, people started sharing images of an ugly creature, apparently in San Jose, California. The photos emerged first on Reddit, according to hoax-debunking website Snopes.com.

The original Facebook post was deleted, but the photos were still being shared as of Monday.

Some users said the picture was actually of a skinned or possibly half-eaten newborn deer.

“Sometimes when mother deer/cattle are in fight or flight situations they will evacuate their uterus to allow for a quicker escape,” one person wrote. “Not saying that’s what happened here but it could’ve.”

Snopes also posted a picture of a skinned, baby deer (warning: somewhat graphic) as a point of reference.

The mysterious Navy missile launch was also captured on video in by photographer Justin Majeczky. He was high above the Golden Gate Bridge on Slacker Hill in San Francisco when he shot the footage:
