Alemayehu Atomsa, the recently resigned president of the Oromia region in Ethiopia, is dead at age 45 after a battle with typhoid fever.

Alemayehu, a native of Sere Village, was elected member of the Oromia Regional State Council in 2009, reported the Awramba Times.

He earned a law degree and a master’s degree in Public Policy from the Ethiopian Civil Service University and the Chinese Beijing University respectively.

He resigned from his president’s post because of his poor health.

For the past five weeks, he had been receiving medical care in Bangkok, Thailand.

He had been scheduled to return to Ethiopia on March 6.
