A young fisherman survived more than 24 hours in a plastic crate in the cold sea off the Alaskan coast after his boat sank.
Ryan Harris, 19, was cast into the Pacific Ocean when his boat overturned in rough waters, and he was forced to seek refuge by holding onto a 4-foot by 4-foot plastic bin for 26 hours, The Associated Press reported.
“I gave myself a pep talk,” he told The Associated Press, adding that he repeatedly told himself, “I’m not going to die here.”
He was eventually rescued by a Coast Guard helicopter.
His fishing partner, Stonie “Mac” Huffman, also fell into the sea and was rescued on a beach around 25 miles northwest of the town of Sitka, located in southeastern Alaska.
“I never thought I was going to die, but I was worried about Mac,” Harris was quoted as saying by AP. “I’m glad to be here.”
