An Alabama man fatally shot his baby daughter before turning the gun on himself, according to officials.

Trenton Gordon, 23, also wounded the grandfather of his slain 6-month-old daughter during a dispute.

Police responded to a domestic call at around 1 p.m. in Ohatchee, and the initial fight was between Gordon, a registered sex offender, and the girl’s mother, AL.com reported.

The mother had filed a protective order against Gordon, said Calhoun County Sheriff Matthew Wade.

Gordon had brought the child, identified by Wade as Kahlia Gordon in a report from WBRC, to a house before the argument ensued.

Then, he pulled out a gun and shot the maternal grandfather in the arm before going outside, killing the girl, before killing himself, Wade said.

Wade said deputies tried to perform CPR on the girl until paramedics arrived, but they were unsuccessful.

“I just hate that this happened,” Wade was quoted by AL.com as saying. “It’s very sad and it’s just senseless.”

About 40 minutes before the incident, Gordon posted a message on Facebook, which read, “Today will be the last day I live, I love everyone that was in my life,” reported WBRC.

Citing his sex offender status, Wade said it’s not clear how Gordon got possession of the child.

“He might’ve got the child from another disturbance, in a jurisdiction that’s not handled by the sheriff’s office, we’re not sure how that happened yet. But he arrived with the child in possession. I believe he was trying to get the mother of the child to get in the vehicle with him,” Wade said.

The grandfather of the girl was hospitalized, and his condition was not clear, WBRC reported.

Neighbor Eleanor Edwards told ABC3340 that Gordon and the mother of the child had temporarily lived with her in the past. She saw Gordon a day before the shootings, and nothing appeared amiss.

“He said he was gonna come out and pick up some mail. I had sent him a message told him I had. He sounded normal,” she told the station.

A friend of Gordon, Marla Warren, said it’s not clear why he did it, adding that he has another child.

“He cherished those kids, like he would have died for those children, literally,” Warren told the ABC affiliate. “This whole situation just makes no sense to me whatsoever because it’s so outside of his character.”

However, Edwards said Gordon had mentioned that he and the mother of the girl had recently broken up.

Officials are still investigating the matter.

Ohatchee is located in the Birmingham metropolitan area.

No further details were provided in the case.
