Former vice president Al Gore and former second lady Tipper Gore announced that they have split up after being married for more than 40 years.

The couple made an announcement to their friends and fans in a statement that was posted by Politico on Tuesday.

“This is very much a mutual and mutually supportive decision that we have made together following a process of long and careful consideration,” read the statement.

There does not seem to be any specific occurrence that led to the separation. The couple married in May of 1970. The Gores had four children named Karenna, Kristin, Sarah, and Albert III. The family would like be left alone for the time being.

“We ask for respect for our privacy and that of our family, and we do not intend to comment further,” read the statement.

The Washington Post confirmed the validity of the statement after contacting the Gore family public relations representative.

There was no sign that the couple would split. There were no public comments or stories of infidelity. On the surface, it seems that both Tipper and Al think that it is just time to call it quits after four decades.

Al Gore has made a multitude of achievements in his career as a politician and for his efforts to protect the environment. He served as the vice president during the Clinton administration, and narrowly lost a presidential bid to George Bush. Prior to his time in the White House Gore served in the House and the Senate. He received the Nobel Peace Prize for his work alongside the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Tipper has published five books since 1997. She also made a name for herself as a political activist while protecting children from inappropriate music and film content. Two of her books she co-wrote with her husband.
