Vitor Belfort, who has been pleading his case to fight for the UFC Middleweight title, may finally get his chance.
Chris Weidman, the new Middleweight champion, knocked out longtime champ Anderson Silva in a stunning fashion. Silva appeared to toy with Weidman, but he caught “The Spider” with a well-placed shot to the chin, dropping him. He followed up with strikes on the ground before the fight was stopped.
Following his victory, Belfort, whom many consider to be one of the top fighters in the division--with stunning headkick knockouts in his past two bouts--called out UFC President Dana White to set up a match between he and Weidman.
“No is my time no rematch to silva @danawhite is my time,” he wrote on Twitter.
He also congratulated Weidman on Twitter, but said in Portuguese: “Now is my turn. I deserve it. [I] want my dream to come true.”
“#NOREMATCH lets RT THIS IT IS MY TIME @danawhite @lorenzofertitta,” he later wrote, suggesting that Silva and Weidman should not have a rematch.
“I trust that if Anderson keeps the belt on Saturday night or if Chris Weidman wins, they will accept the challenge to fight me next because I earned the spot,” Belfort told USA Today earlier this week. “Dana White, make it happen!”
