A Georgia man has been arrested after passing out drunk and letting his subsequently unsupervised child drink nearly a fatal amount of alcohol.

Marcus Daniel Allen, 20, became unconscious while sipping on a fruit cocktail through a straw, and his 3-year-old son started drinking the beverage.

After authorities received a call from another family member, they found Allen passed out in his bedroom and his child smelling of alcohol.

Both were taken to the hospital, and the child tested for a blood-alcohol content twice the legal limit for driving.

“I think it could have been a lot worse had they not come home when they did,” said Gainesville Police Deputy Chief Jay Parrish, according to local station 11Alive. “Had the child ingested more alcohol, it could have been fatal.”

Allen tried to escape to the hospital’s parking lot after seeing the police, but he was arrested and charged with one count of cruelty to children.

The child is OK, police said, and placed under the mother’s care by child services.

“I think it just goes to show that to parent and raise a child, we have to be highly vigilant at all times, and have to put the children first and our behavior second, for their well being,” Parrish said.
