Ellen DeGeneres, talk show host and animal rights activist, recently delivered the 2010 Adopt-A-Turkey campaign plea as this year’s spokesperson for the Farm Sanctuary’s project. “Save a life this Thanksgiving, and join me in starting a new tradition by adopting a turkey instead of eating one through Farm Sanctuary’s Adopt-A-Turkey Project,” noted DeGeneres.

In place since 1986, the annual Adopt-A-Turkey Project offers a safe sanctuary at its New York or California shelters, or placement with families, for doomed feathered friends. The organization’s website disturbingly reports that between “250 [million] and 300 million turkeys are raised for slaughter every year in the United States—more than 46 million alone for Thanksgiving.”

It goes on to say that “since turkeys are excluded from the Humane Slaughter Act, requiring animals to be stunned prior to slaughter, they face brutal conditions in death and throughout their short lives, often just 14 to 18 weeks.
