The Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO,) which is introducing a new introductory prototype class for its regional feeder series.

The new entry-level class, dubbed LMP3, will replace the Formula Le Mans/LMPC Oreca FLM09, which has been the ACO’s entry-level prototype class since its introduction in 2009.

The new LMP3 class will feature a specified drive train and tire, like FLM/PC. Unlike FLM/PC, LMP3 will allow various constructors to build their own chassis. As with FLM/PC, LMP3 is intended to be a very accessible class; the turnkey cost is projected to be €150,000 ($203,000) and the price of replacements parts and spares will be capped.

The new LMP3 is projected to cost about half as much as an Oreca FLM09, while providing the same performance, being slower than an LMP2 and faster than a GTE.

Because the class will be open to any chassis constructor, it offers better business opportunities to companies which otherwise would competing to supply the limited number of LPMP2 teams.

The car will be introduced into the European and Asian Le Mans Series in 2015.

Originally designed as a support series, Formula Le Mans was incorporated into Le Mans-class racing in 2010. The class was designed to be a cost-effective entry point for teams moving up to prototypes. The cars used identical chassis and motors with a limited range of allowable adjustments.

The class grew particularly popular in North America, where the departure of factory-supported prototype teams left a vacuum which was quickly filled by teams wanting to gain experience before moving up to the top prototype classes.

The Oreca FLM09, powered by a 378-inch Chevrolet motor, is still the entry level prototype for the Tudor United Sports car Series, formed by the merger of the American Le Mans Series and the Rolex
