AC Transit workers have issued 72-hour strike notice on Monday, amid contract negotiations between the agency and the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 192.
The move comes just three days after the Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District (AC Transit) said on its website that it would continue running regular service even if there was a Bay Area Transit Agency (BART) strike.
Workers for BART are threatening to strike on Tuesday if no deal is reached on Monday.
Workers for AC Transit have rejected two contract proposals that union negotiators agreed to, reported CBS. Transit officials received a letter from the union saying workers plan to go on strike at 12:01 Thursday morning if no deal is reached.
Workers rejected the proposals, which included a pay increase and lower health care contributions, saying they’ve endured tough contracts over the past several years.
“Just as homeowners are underwater on a mortgage, AC Transit employees are feeling underwater after this recession,” said Yvonne Williams, president of ATU Local 192. “Our negotiating committee worked very hard to achieve this agreement with strong community support. We are very appreciative of that support. We will meet to determine next steps shortly.”
