AUSTIN, TEXAS—Austin Asian American Chamber of Commerce Education (AAACCE) donated $1,500 to Leadership Austin on May 10. The funds will be used to grant scholarships to selected Asian American applicants in their Essential Program and are intended to encourage Asian Americans in Austin to develop strong leadership skills and better serve the community.

For 30 years, Leadership Austin has fostered the development of leaders from all walks of life. Programs are tailored to leaders of all experience levels, and explore critical community issues, develop the leadership skills needed to address those issues, and foster the relationships and collaboration that create positive change, according to its Facebook page.

The programs are: Essential, Emerge, Engage, Excel, Experience in Austin and Leadership Academy for Public Service.

Each program offers different training to different groups. For instance, the Emerge program provides promising young professionals the opportunity to build relationships and develop leadership skills in order to truly make a difference in their community.

The scholarships are for selected Asian American applicants in the Essential Program. According to its website, “each year, 55 people representing the diversity of Central Texas are selected to participate in Leadership Austin’s Essential class. The curriculum focuses on regional issues, leadership skills, and building strong networks to encourage innovative and collaborative solutions to the region’s challenges. Since 1979, nearly 1,500 individuals have graduated from the Essential class.” Among the graduates are the COO of the Lance Armstrong Foundation, Betty Otter, and Austin Mayor Lee Leffinwell, as well as many Asian Americans who serve the community such as the chairman of AAACC, Ali Khawtaw.
