An Illinois man captured on camera the tornado that killed his wife and destroyed their home.

Clem Schultz of Fairdale—a tiny rural neighborhood of 152—went upstairs to get some camping lanterns in case the power went off from the storm on April 9, 2015.

The bedroom window gave Schultz a great vantage point from which to record the tornado, so he started doing just that.

Schultz is heartbroken about the loss of his wife and home, but decided eventually to release the footage.

And there was one key survivor of the storm that helps him cope with his suffering. The couple’s white shepherd Missy, who went missing, was found alive two days after the storm.

Now the video is being used by scientists who study the structure of tornadoes, and is going to be shown at an upcoming meeting.

“I’m proud of it,” Schultz told the Herald. “My video is saving lives.”
