A 9-year-old boy has been punished by a school principal for writing an “unwanted” love note to a classmate, the boy’s mother said.

The note contains innocent words including “I like you” that’s written in a heart as well as “I like your eyes because they sparkle like diamonds.”

The mother, who is from Tampa, Florida, told WPTV that a Hillsborough County Public School District principal said the school would file “sexual harassment charges” against the boy if he sends another note.

The mother, who wished to remain anonymous, said that she couldn’t believe what she heard.

“What little kid doesn’t write love notes?” the mother asked.

A district administrator told ABC News that the boy had written more than one note, saying they were “unwanted.” The district has a policy of discouraging students from passing notes.

Kristi Davisson, a Tampa-area attorney with children in the Hillsborough School District, spoke with Yahoo about the boy’s situation.

“I’m disappointed that the authorities chose to take such a heavy handed approach, if, in fact, they did. I’d be surprised if any law enforcement officer or prosecutor’s office would take legal action,” she said.

According to reports, other students escalated the situation by taunting the boy, and they said that he wanted to see the girl naked. The principal then stepped in, Yahoo reported.

“The district has had a huge push to stop bullying,” added Davisson. “Now they may have allowed this child to become a victim of it.”

Psychologist Dr. Valerie McClain told KDVR she doesn’t believe it’s sexual harassment. “What needs to happen is education needs to be provided about how to relate to this young girl or how to stay away from talking to her if that’s the goal,” McClain explained.

“He’s 9,” added the boy’s mother, according to ABC Action News.

“My 9-year-old doesn’t even know what sexual harassment means.”
