An 8-year-old boy from New Paris, Indiana, was arrested Tuesday, July 18, for resisting law enforcement and operating a motor vehicle without a license after a short chase by police.

Goshen City Police said they were notified by a dispatcher before 9 p.m. that a reckless driver was approaching the city of Goshen, about 140 minutes north of Indianapolis, from State Road 15 from the south.

When officers reached the car, which they  identified only as an SUV, it was going about 80 mph and “not slowing or stopping for any traffic control devices,” Goshen Police Department spokeswoman Tina Kingsbury said in an email.

After a chase that lasted a few minutes, police were able to stop the driver and took him into custody. He was later released to his parents, who were the owners of the vehicle.

There were no drugs or alcohol involved and the boy was the only person in the vehicle, Kingsbury said. What the child’s motive for taking the car was, police did not know.

The charges against the boy will be reviewed by a prosecutor and filed in juvenile court.
