It’s never been easier to make and record music -- today’s technology allows virtually anyone to become a professional-sounding musician. There is everything from “smart” instruments to tablets with apps that can alter your music. The National Association of Music Merchants holds a conference each year where it releases new gadgets to musicians all over the world. Entry-Level Keyboard that Teaches Piano Lessons

The most common instrument, by far, is the piano. However, it’s also the least portable. That’s where the keyboard comes to the rescue. There are several to choose from that range from foldable to heavy-duty. The best keyboards have options for recording music and changing the sound of the keys.

Instead of paying a music teacher for piano lessons, you can buy the Yamaha EZ-220 keyboard and learn at home by yourself. This keyboard starts at the beginning and progressively teaches you new piano skills. There are 100 songs prerecorded for you to learn. Additionally, this keyboard has a USB cord to connect to any computer to let you find more music or alter your personal compositions. You can also change the sound of the keys to sound like other instruments, such as a guitar, drums, strings, wind instruments, and more. Another great keyboard option in is the Korg Kaossilator 2.

Self-Tuning Guitar

There are all sorts of “smart” instruments besides the portable keyboard, such as a self-tuning guitar. Musicians have to tune their guitars practically every time they play. This is because the strings loosen as they are plucked and strummed. However, in 2013 there is now a self-tuning guitar that does the work for you. The Peavy Self-Tuning AT-200 will make you sound great every time. Plus, you don’t have to waste time tuning which gives you more time to rock. The self-tuning guitars is one of the greatest music inventions since computer programs that autocorrect your voice in a recording if you’re off key.

Electric Drums

If you’re in a band, drums are one of the most important instruments. They help you keep the beat and give your fans something to dance to. However, you no longer have to lug around the old, clunky drum sets. There are electric drums that condense the system and provide more versatility.

If you want a good set of electric drums, the Roland TD-30KV is one of the best. It gives you all the standard sounds with a variety of cymbals thrown into your arsenal. The Yamaha DTV950K is another awesome option, but the Alesis DM10 X is one of the more budget-friendly options.

Tabletop PC

Of course, you don’t have to own fancy instruments to make great music in 2013 because of the awesome new technology. For instance, musicians no longer have to buy an expensive keyboard to play and record their music. Instead, a tabletop PC can function as a keyboard, a recording studio, and a publishing device. There are several keyboard programs on the Lenovo Horizon that allow musicians to mix tracks, record music, and play several different instruments. Technology has changed the way that musicians create, and the tabletop PC is making it easier for them. A smaller tablet can help with apps, but this Lenovo tabletop PC is changing the way any musicians create.

Wireless Speakers

Speakers are another important piece of equipment musicians need, especially those that want to perform for large audiences. However, nobody likes the unsightly cords associated with portable speakers and amps. That’s why high-quality wireless speakers were invented. With options like Alto Professional TruSonic wireless speakers, musicians can broadcast their music without ugly cords. Just place one speaker at each end of your stage and you’re good to go. These wireless speakers are very powerful and very loud. They are the perfect solution for a musician that does a lot of performances and needs to have his own equipment. High Tech Microphone

Computers and tablets only come with basic recording capabilities. If you plan to make good-quality music, you need an external microphone that will hold up to the job and capture clear sound. There are several options on the market, but the ATM-610 microphone from Audio-Technica is a good option because it was specifically designed for recording vocal performances. The recordings from this microphone come out pure and dynamic. It can also be used with most computers and recording devices.

There are lots of other recording options, but the important thing to look for is a microphone that can adjust for background noise and record the pure quality of your music. Wired options are still the best, but you can find some high-quality performance microphones, too.

Noise Cancelling Headphones

Nothing improves your music listening experience better than a high-quality pair of headphones. In 2013 you have options for in-ear headphones as well as over-the-head options that hug your ears. Bose creates a variety of over-the-head headphones that are lightweight and comfortable and produce some of the best quality sound. They also have noise-cancelling properties and can produce an amazing amount of sound. Bose is a great brand, but there are several other headphones that will have you creating and listening to beautiful music.

Tablets with Music Altering Apps

No matter what type of smartphone or tablet you own, there are apps that can enhance your music — whether you simply want to listen to music or combine recordings. Some of the best and most popular music apps for listening to music include Pandora, Spotify, and iHeart. If you want to identify songs, Shazam and SoundHound can help you out. Or, if you want to improve your performance sound quality, Poweramp or DoubleTwist are the way to go. These are just a few of the awesome devices available to musicians in 2013. You'll still have to practice to become a good musician, but technology is making it easier than ever. What are some of your favorites gadgets for musicians, and why? Leave a comment below.
