The QS World University Rankings 2023 has finally been released by Quacquarelli Symonds, the world’s leading higher education research institute. MIT ranked first for the 11th consecutive year, 7 universities in Hong Kong were on the list, with the University of Hong Kong ranked at 21.

This year’s QS World University Rankings is the largest list ever, with 1,418 institutions listed, over 150,000 academics and nearly 100,000 employers’ views collected. The rankings are based on six metrics: academic reputation (40 percent), number of citations (20 percent), student-teacher ratio (20 percent), employer reputation (10 percent), and internationalization of faculty and students (5 percent each).

Looking at the standings, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is ranked first. The University of Cambridge that ranked third along with Stanford University last year, moved up to second place, Stanford remained in third place. The University of Oxford came fourth this year, and Harvard University remained in fifth place.

O the seven universities in Hong Kong on the list, the University of Hong Kong was 21st, the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) was 38th, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) 65th, and Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) ranked 281.

Apart from the four Universities that rose in rank, three others had lower scores. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) fell from 34 to 40, City University of Hong Kong ( CityU) came in at 54, and Lingnan University fell from the group of 581 - 590, to 601-650.

“All at once, we see a location in which international scrutiny may have affected its reputation among academics and employers alike, but also an intensely international student and faculty base that generates truly world-class research,” The Standard quoted Senior Vice President of QS Quacquarelli Symonds Ben Sowter.
