LOWER BURRELL, Pa.—A 6-year-old boy has been killed in a crash that police say occurred when his mother swerved to miss a deer in western Pennsylvania.

The Westmoreland County coroner plans an autopsy Friday on the body of Isaac Thomas. The Lower Burrell boy was pronounced dead at Allegheny Valley Hospital more than an hour after the crash Thursday morning.

Police say the boy’s mother, Amber Kindler, were traveling on a rural road when she hit a tree trying to avoid the deer. Her SUV then rolled onto its side and slid into another tree, police said.

Kindler was taken to Forbes Regional Hospital in Monroeville with unspecified injuries.

The boy attended the Burrell School District whose superintendent issued a statement offering condolences.
