More than 400 students at Henan University of Science and Technology have developed high fevers in the past few days. They are undergoing treatment in hospital. Ambulances are standing by inside the campus until called for. The cause of the fever is under investigation.

According to media reports, the deputy director of the Disease Prevention and Control Division of Department of Health of Henan Province, Shan Xinguo said 22 students appeared to come down with fever symptoms on March 26, 2006. The next day the number of students who had developed fevers increased to 88, and by March 28 had swelled to 204. Some patients’ temperatures rose as high as 39.6 degrees Celsius. Presently, more than 400 students have been isolated for treatment.

The main symptoms are a high temperature and joint pains. After one to two days of medical treatment, they return to normal. As of April 2, there are still a dozen students in the hospital for further observation.

Test results of collected samples rule out the possibility of types A and B influenza (flu), according to the Henan Health Sector. The incident remains under investigation.
