Many people don’t realize the type of office you work in has a direct bearing on your mood and can affect your productivity. If you want to improve the workplace so that your employees can become more productive, follow the tips below for updating your office space.

1. Your Lighting Is Horrible

Statistics show office improvements won’t do much good if you don’t have proper lighting for your employees to work by. If the lighting in your building is up to date and doesn’t strain your employees’ eyes, productivity can increase by as much as eight percent. Another bonus to having the right type of lighting is there are approximately 58 percent fewer accidents.

Experts state natural lighting is the best way to go when improving your office décor, as studies show sunlight is a natural mood lifter and makes people feel more energetic.

2. Your Space Is Small and Boring

You should make sure that the office furniture you choose leaves plenty of space for your employees to work. No one can work well in a cramped space. Allow your workers to make their workspace their own as well. Derek Wall, CEO of TheStore.com explains, “Letting employees decorate with pictures, plants, and personal touches in their space helps them feel happier and more comfortable at work. This in turn makes them more productive employees.”

3. Watch That Thermostat!

At one time, it was thought that if people were cold, they would work harder to keep warm. Studies show that this is very far from the truth. If it is 100 degrees outside and your employees are showing up with sweaters and hats, it’s time to adjust the thermostat.

4. Dysfunctional Furniture

If your furniture looks and feels like it came from the ‘70s, then it is time to update and let the modern world take over. From desks to modern chairs, there are a lot of options out there. The Mayo Clinic recommends ergonomic (read “comfortable”) office furniture, not only to maximize work output but also to minimize sick days.

These are just a few tips for redoing your office that you can follow when it is time to redecorate. If you want your employees to be more productive, this is the best way to do it. From raising the temperature to letting them create their own personal space, updating your office will lead to more productive and efficient employees.
