NEW YORK—A New York City-based program that awards cash prizes totaling $35,000 to student entrepreneurs for innovative business plans has opened for applications.

NYC Next Idea accepts business plans from students and recent graduates from all over the world. Last year the program received plans from more than 60 countries.

The city’s Economic Development Corporation and Columbia University’s Engineering School are behind the competition, which is aimed at “attracting groundbreaking startup companies to the city and showcasing talent from universities around the world,” according to a blog post from the corporation.

Last year Brian Shimmerlik of NYU’s Stern School of Business and Tomas Grosskopf of Universidad de Buenos Aires in Argentina won the prize, $17,500, and six months of free office space in New York City. Their idea, called TaxiTreats, would put small vending machines into the planned new taxis, or Taxis of Tomorrow.

Teams must be between two and five members and have at least one non-US citizen, or at least two non-US citizens if the team has four or five members. The deadline to submit an executive summary is November 9. Plans should be for New York City.
