After Decades Of Delay, New Yorks Second Ave Subway Project Gets Underway

NEW YORK—On Monday, Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) awarded a $324.6 million contract for the new 96th Street subway station at Second Avenue.

The contract was awarded to a joint venture of E.E. Cruz and Company, and Tully Construction Company Inc. for the ancillary buildings, entrances, electrical, plumbing, and finishes at the station.

The Second Avenue subway is extending along the Q Line northward to 96th Street from Midtown Manhattan. New stations are being added along Second Avenue at 72nd Street, 86th Street, and 96th Street.

“The award of this contract brings us closer to making the Second Avenue subway a reality for our customers,” said Michael Horodniceanu, the president of MTA Capital Construction, in a press release.

The project aims to reduce overcrowding and delays on the Lexington Avenue line, and will include a two-track T Line along Second Avenue from 125th Street to the Financial District in Lower Manhattan. A total of 16 ADA accessible stations will be constructed.

The 96th Street station will also connect Second Avenue, through the 63rd Street tunnel, to existing tracks for West Midtown and Brooklyn.

The extended subway line is scheduled to open December 2016. There are two more contracts remaining to be awarded on the project.
